The World Health Organisation has formally declared an end to Uganda's Ebola outbreak, signalling a major public health milestone for the East African nation after more than three months of sustained vigilance. The WHO announcement came on Wednesday following verification that Uganda had maintained 42 consecutive days without recording a single confirmed case, the epidemiological threshold necessary to declare an outbreak under control. Marie Roseline Belizaire, representing the WHO, delivered the confirmation through an online briefing conducted by the WHO Regional Office for Africa, underscoring the significance of reaching this checkpoint.

Uganda's Health Ministry had already made its own declaration of victory on July 28, with Minister Chris Baryomunsi announcing that the nation was officially Ebola-free. The ministry's statement emphasised that advances in epidemiological investigations and the fully characterised understanding of the outbreak trajectory provided sufficient scientific foundation to conclude that transmission chains had been definitively interrupted. This dual announcement—both national and international—represents a turning point for Uganda, which has faced multiple disease challenges in recent years and has built considerable capacity in outbreak response.

The outbreak itself was traced to an imported case originating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a reminder of the cross-border disease dynamics that characterise Central and East African regions. Uganda formally declared the outbreak on May 15 after confirming this initial case, setting in motion a public health response that would span nearly four months. The relatively contained scale of the outbreak—with 20 confirmed cases across the country—reflects improved surveillance systems and rapid containment measures compared to earlier Ebola incidents that devastated West Africa.

Among the 20 confirmed cases recorded, Uganda achieved a notably high recovery rate, with 18 patients successfully treated and discharged from medical facilities. Only two deaths were attributed to the outbreak, representing a case fatality rate of 10 percent.
